Healthy Eating in a Recession

An entry by QponCutie on 05/28/2009

If you’re anything like me, the Recession is always floating around there in the back of your mind.   Our family has been very blessed in that we haven’t been hit too hard by the current problems, but being a Frugalista to the core, I still want to be able to save as much money as we can.  I’ve been reading about “Recession Pounds” lately.  People are apparently gaining weight because they are buying cheaper processed foods in an effort to save money.  That doesn’t need to be the case, however.  There are easy and inexpensive ways to keep off the pounds, and keep on a budget.

  • Drinks can be an expensive part of a grocery budget.  I know when I buy packs of sodas, they’re gone VERY quickly, and they’re not that cheap!  Tap water is practically free!  If you buy a water filter, either the pitcher-style, or one to mount on the faucet, you can get rid of that “tap water” flavor.  Jazz it up with some lemon, orange, or cucumber slices!  Another favorite is seltzer water mixed with a small amount of 100% fruit juice.
  • Don’t buy fresh fruits or veggies that aren’t in season!  Their frozen counterparts are inexpensive, and frozen at their peak, so they retain their delicious flavor and nutrients!  Have you ever eaten vanilla ice cream topped with thawed frozen berries?  Delish!  You can also grow some own produce as well!  Even if you don’t have a garden, you can start a container garden.  Now that summer is quickly approaching, we’re in prime Farmer’s Market season.  Google your city and “farmer’s market” to get a list of local markets.
  • Beans & Rice, Rice & Beans…whole grains, dried beans, and legumes are still very affordable.  Actually, rice and beans is a pretty yummy meal!  My hubby makes a mean version!  They’re healthy as well!  Hillbilly Housewife has a yummy pinto bean recipe that makes a TON, so you can utilize the leftovers for refried beans for burritos another day!
  • To avoid last-minute eating out, start utilizing that old CrockPot!  This is one I definitely need to start doing!  Busy families are often rushed for dinner, so we order takeout or hit the drive thru.  Bad for our wallets AND our waistlines!  Prep dinner in the CrockPot in the morning, and by the time you get home, you’ll have a delicious, healthy, homecooked meal for your family the doesn’t break the bank!

So what about you, my Frugal Friends?  What tips are you using to eat well during these tough times?  Come on, share with the group!
